Synopsis

D H Lawrence, one of the great writers of this century, visited Australia in 1922. Athough his stay was brief and passed largely unnoticed, it led to two major novels, a poem, a number of letters and an influence that touched several of his subsequent works. For many years this period in Lawrence's life has been largely ignored or underestimated by both scholars and Australians, who imagined that his visit was of little significance. Robert Darroch's recent research and discoveries have thrown a new and fascinating light on Lawrence's time in Australia and the major novel he wrote in New South Wales between June and July 1922, KANGAROO. This book, dismissed up until now as unreal and a figment of the author's odd imagination, is in fact a unique glimpse at a half-forgotten period of violence and hatred in Australia, a period when secret fascist armies were formed to fight socialism and communism. D H Lawrence came across one of these sinister organisations during his stay, and KANGAROO was written as a result of this contact. D H LAWRENCE IN AUSTRALIA is the strange and intriguing story of this period in Lawrence's life. This book has has a "donated to" sticker on the front end page but never made it to library shelves.
