From School Library Journal

ea. vol: 32p. (Just So Stories Series). CIP. Bedrick, dist. by Harper. June 1986. PLB $8.95. Grade 2-4 In How the Leopard Got His Spots, Ebborn uses pen-and-ink drawings washed in various shades of rich yellows and browns to set the mood of the tale. The detailed illustrations are realistic, engaging, and complement the text. At times, however, they are unsuccessful in conveying motion. A major weakness in this volume is the use of language from the original text. This original wording may cause raised eyebrows when readers see words such as "nigger." Other versions, including the title illustrated by Leonard Weisgard (Walker, 1972) omit the term without losing the author's meaning. Taylor's illustrations add to Kipling's text in the Sing-Song of Old Man Kangaroo. The pencil drawings washed in bright watercolor realistically depict why the kangaroo now has long hind legs and big feet. This volume will be useful for reading aloud, for storytelling, for reluctant readers who may be intimidated by collections of the tales, or as an introduction to the genre.
