A beguiling tabby cat enjoys playing with a feather, fighting in the alley, curling up in a warm spot, and sharpening her claws on the couch

PreSchool-Grade 1 This simple account of a boy's tabby cat describes how he got the cat, the way the cat plays and sleeps and the special things that they do together. The text is a bit more difficult than Wheeler's "Marmalade" books (Knopf), but the descriptions of the interactions between owner and pet are quite similar. The scratchy pen-and-ink drawings with watercolors are reminiscent of Robert Byrd's style in Marcella Was Bored (Dutton, 1985). The cat reveals his perky character in the cartoon-style pictures, but the story is slight and lacks sparkle. Fans of cat tales will enjoy the zestier adventures of Rotten Ralph (Houghton, 1976) by Gantos or the escapades of Oakley's "Church Mouse" series (Atheneum).
