9780333569580: The devil's own luck

Synopsis

1793: the onset of Britain's conflict with Revolutionary France. Ex-captain turned privateer, Harry Ludlow finds himself on board the naval 74-gun Magnanime, with his brother James. In command is Oliver Carter, a captain with whom Harry has an unfortunate history. But when James is found standing over the body of a dead officer, old scores appear to be put aside...at least for the time being. Blinded by his own prejudice, Harry sets out to prove his brother's innocence, but it is soon apparent that his feud with Carter is not the only dark secret aboard the Magnanime.

From the Publisher

An avowed lover of naval fiction with a streak of mischief, David Donachie has sailed into a breach in the nautical genre by blending seagoing adventure with the mystery and twists of a whodunnit. A Scot by birth, he lives on the Channel coast of England, where he works to keep his inspirations in motion ("I have about three ideas a day) by the way, all my ideas are great") and has lately published a biographical novel about Admiral Lord Nelson and Lady Emma Hamilton. He now lives in Deal with hi s partner, Sarah and two children, Thomas and Charlotte.

About the Author

DAVID DONACHIE was born in Edinburgh in 1944 and has had a variety of jobs, including selling everything from business machines to soap. He has always had an abiding interest in the naval history of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The author of a number of bestselling books, he know lives in Deal with his wife, the novelist Sarah Grazebrook and their two children.

Peter has been a working actor for over thirty years. In theatre he has played a wide range of roles, including rep all around the UK, and an active TV and film career. He has often chosen jobs involving travel. Most importantly (to him), Peter enjoyed a spell on the BBC Radio Rep. That all led to audiobooks, and his only regret about this is that he doesn't usually travel far to do it!
