9780333774908: A History of NATO: The First Fifty Years

Synopsis

A History of NATO-The First Fifty Years is the first comprehensive study of the institution's activities and development over the past five decades. Written by a team of international scholars, it analyzes the factors which have made NATO the most successful politico-military alliance in history. It also addresses the perennial problems of transatlantic relationships and the problems that the Alliance grapples with today. A wide-ranging and masterful survey, this book will be an indispensable reference work and an accessible guide for students. The three volumes contain the work of over 60 contributors including articles from Lawrence S. Kaplan, Michael J. Brenner, Christopher Coker, John English, J. L. Granatstein, Bruce Kuniholm, Olav Riste, Kori Schaker, Klaus Schwabe, and Rolf Tamnes. Author Gustav Schmidt is Professor of International Politics, Faculty of Social Sciences, and a co-opted member of the Faculty of History, Ruhr-Universität Bochum.

Review

'This three-volume project is the most comprehensive imaginable The work was also done with acute awareness of the current problems facing NATO. Many a NATO official and many a journalist who thinks the world began in 1990 or whenever they assumed their present post would do well to read these contributions, not because history repeats itself, but because enduring structures can produce variations on the same problem. But this collection of articles is priceless information not only for officials and journalists. It should be basic reading for any student of NATO and merits a place on any International Relations syllabus.' - D.B.G. Heuser, Professor of International and Strategic Studies, Department of War Studies, King's College, London

'In the post-Cold War world, as in the previous half-century, NATO continues to be at the centre of U.S.-European relations, and remains the globe's most important alliance. This work, authored by many of the most distinguished persons working the field, and sharpened by the most important conference yet to be held to evaluate the increasingly tense relationships, must be at the centre of future discussions, studies, and policymaking on the subject.' - Walter LáFeber, Cornell University

Clearly towers above most...what has emerged is an important work of synthesis and original scholarship that encourages reflection...' - International Affairs
