Elisabeth Schuessler Fiorenza, well-known for her pioneering New Testament study In Memory of Her, was not only present at the creation of the feminist movement in theology and church, but was one of those women who gave it birth. In commemoration of the tenth anniversary of her book In Memory of Her (Crossroad, 1984), Fiorenza presents a collection of superb essays, which, as she says in the introduction, also serve to document the history of feminist theology. These essays articulate a vision of spiritual liberation and authority for Christian women. Each is introduced with a "contextualization" that tells the reader the circumstances of the first presentation and of the evolution of thought in the intervening years. Why would a feminist stay in the church? Why would a feminist baptize her daughter in the patriarchal church? Fiorenza here answers these questions with scholarship, reflection, and compassion.
