Synopsis
Here is a great deal of information, clearly and simply stated, in the shortest possible space. This book is a basic introduction to Islam, its history, teachings, practices and institutions, presented as accessibly as if it were in a magazine or newspaper. We are introduced to Muhammad and his teaching; the trends and schools in Islam; the history and spread of Islam; art and science in Islam; and to the different situations of Muslims in the world of the mid-1990s, in Europe and North Africa, in Turkey and the Middle East, in the former Soviet Union and Africa, on the Indian sub-continent and in Indonesia. There is a chronological table and a list of books for further reading. A former editor with the German Language Service of the BBC, Roland Machatschke is Editor in Chief, Television News and Current Affairs, with the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, and lectures in journalism at Vienna University.

Roland Machatschke is a former editor of the British Broadcasting German Service. He now works with Austrian radio and lectures in the University of Vienna.
