Based on a series of British case studies, this volume examines what happens in primary school inspections both in technical and emotional terms. It explores tensions between judgment and development, myth and reality, evidence and interpretation, and the institution and the individual, as well as raising issues about power, professionalism, objectivity, credibility, and confidence, and revealing the internal workings of inspection as conditional, negotiated, and dominated by human nature. "I found the case study findings interesting, readable andaccessible. The book had a sense of continuity and progression with an unfolding story. I found the growing awareness of complexity of issues helpful and thought-provoking." - Management in Education "This very accessible and readable book will prove useful to all those involved in the inspection process directly and for those outside the process who wish to understand clearly the effects of its implementation." - British Educational Research Journal "...a sensitive, perceptive insight into primary inspection." - British Journal of Education Studies "This very accessible and readable book will prove useful to all those involved in the inspection process directly and for those outside the process who wish to understand clearly the effects of its implementation." - British Educational Research Journal "...highly provocative and offers a refreshing new approach to the study of schools...this book makes an important contribution to an underexamined area of education research - that of the political and economic contexts of the conditions of teacher work" - Qualitative Studies in Education
