Synopsis

Finding that the concept of discourse that is being used increasingly in the human and social sciences to be largely implicit and conceptually under-thematized, Howarth (political theory, U. of Essex) introduces, clarifies, and contextualizes some of the ways the concept has been used in the social sciences. He concentrates on its developments within the structuralist, post-structuralist, and post-Marxist traditions of inquiry. The approach to social and political analysis he puts forth builds on Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouttte's theory of discourse. Distributed in the US by Taylor and Francis. Annotation c.
