Reid , published by Coronet Books , ISBN: 0340024062 ? and presented here in Good condition , as sold by Crappy Old Books, which is reassuring because this is not a book that benefits from flimsiness. For those unfamiliar: Colditz was not a charming spa town where one popped in for mineral waters and a polite waltz. It was a German high-security prisoner-of-war castle during the Second World War ? the place where the Third Reich sent the ?difficult? officers. The escapers. The organisers. The men who looked at barbed wire and thought, ?Challenge accepted.? P. R. Reid was one of them. Which means this isn?t a glossy after-the-fact reconstruction filled with dramatic violins and slow-motion heroics. It?s the real thing ? dry, restrained, British-to-the-core understatement applied to situations involving tunnels, disguises, forged papers, and a castle full of men who regarded incarceration as an administrative inconvenience. This is wartime stoicism in paperback form. It is full of ingenuity, patience, and that specific Allied officer mindset that believed rules were binding ? unless they were German rules, in which case one must immediately attempt to circumvent them. The brilliance of Colditz as a story is not loud heroics. It?s persistence. It?s boredom weaponised. It?s men who decide that if you give them four walls and too much time, they will invent an entire underground university, a theatre, and a small but determined engineering department dedicated to leaving. And this 1972 Coronet edition? It has that excellent early-70s paperback energy: solid, readable, slightly serious-looking, probably once carried in a coat pocket on a train. The cover likely promises tension and fortitude. The pages promise resilience. The tone promises that the stiff upper lip was, in fact, structurally load-bearing. Now to condition. This copy is listed as Good , which in Crappy Old Books language means it has survived its own campaign. The spine is intact. The pages are sound. It may show signs of life ? minor creasing, gentle edge wear ? but nothing dramatic. It has not attempted escape from the shelf. It has behaved admirably. Which is fitting.
