Book Description Hardcover. Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Condition: NF. Photos, Art, Maps, Drawings (illustrator). Reprint. When it comes to hunting Philip Holden can say "been there, done that." He had a impressing tally of hunting books to his credit and "Pig Hunting in New Zealand" was logical addition. The pig was introduced by the first European visitors, the colloquial name applied to the wild offspring --- "Captain Cookers" --- giving a clue to their origins. They were also the first foreign animals introduced. As well as proving a popular recreation for hardy hunters with a fondness for hills, valleys, rivers and bush, as well as a feed of wild pork, the animal in NZ has also provided food for Maori and early settlers, was a nuisance to farmers, ripping up pastures and killing lambs and, with rapidly increasing numbers, posed a threat to the native ecology. All these aspects, and others, are well covered by the author, while hunting takes the prime focus.,The book is divided into four parts, the first looking to the history of the animal in NZ, the second visits eight hunting areas in both main islands, the third concentrates on the "life of the wild pig," hunting organisations, the hunter's best friend, the pigdog and the fourth records some of rhe more hectic encounters with this very dangerous best, reputed to have a bite the equal of any animal, not the mention the damage an angry boar can inflict with its tusks. This book is a classic on the wild pig, those who hunt it and the weapons they use. First published in 1982 this first reprint in 1983, 257 pages including bibliography, colour photo section with 15 images, b/w photos throughout, some art work and a few drawings, several maps, pictorial FEPs. Brown hard covers with white spine titles NF, ditto the text block, no inscriptions. DJ is protected with a light plastic protective cover and the jacket is NF with colour front photo and sepia at back. Seller Inventory # 004136
