Synopsis

Writing with Reason examines the question "Can young children be considered as authors?" It is a key issue for every teacher because so much of what has conventionally counted as "teaching writing," such as routine practice and copying, seems to deny the possibility. The chapters in this book are all written by practicing classroom teachers (many involved in the British National Writing Project). Each contributor presents a case-study account of an aspect of children's authorship and demonstrates how children between the ages of three and seven function as authors. In these chapters we see children writing authentically, for real audiences and for real purposes; we see children collaborating to produce effective texts. We see children taking risks, handling written language, controlling their own learning processes. We see young authors at work.
