About the Author

Perry Yoder is professor of Old Testament at Associate Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, Indiana. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in ancient Near Eastern languages and literature. He also studied at Hebrew University, Jerusalem.

Before taking his present assignment in 1984, he taught at Blufton College (Ohio) and Bethel College (Kansas). Between these two terms, he served for two years as People's Teacher of the Word, an itinerant mission of teaching the Bible in local congregations sponsored by Mennonite Voluntary Service.

For four months in 1984, he visited base Christian communities in the Philippines and entered into discussion and dialogue about justice issues. During this period, as well as during a similar visit in the summer of 1985, he tested and refined the ideas developed in Shalom: The Bible's Word for Salvation, Justice , and Peace.

Among other books that he has written are From Word to Life: A Guide to the Art of Bible Study (1982) and Toward Understanding the Bible: Hermeneutics for Lay People (1978).
