A tiny nation has been transformed into a devastating threat to global peace by the awesome technology of war. The lives of three hundred captured Americans dangle by threads clutched in the fist of a ruthless despot. Diplomacy is futile when dealing with an unrepentant madman and his minions. The time has come for the use of force, led by a superb and dedicated fighter pilot named Jack Locke.
Force of Eagles is an electrifying novel of a Superpower pushed to the breaking point, of courageous exploits and vengeance meted out by able men in magnificent machines of war that come screaming out of the skies. For now it is the dawn of a terrifying new day. The world is no longer safe from the murderous whims of petty tyrants. And the last desperate hope of a great nation held hostage lies with the best and the brightest of the U.S. Air Force -- and in an impossible rescue mission that will lead them through the fiery gates of Hell.

A former weapons system operator, Richard Herman was a member of the United States Air Force for twenty-one years, until he retired in 1983 with the rank of major. He is the author of ten previous novels, including The Warbirds, Power Curve, Against All Enemies, Edge of Honor, and The Trojan Sea, all published by Avon Books. Herman currently lives and works in Gold River, a suburb of Sacramento, California.
Set in the immediate future, this sequel to The Warbirds tells of a mission to rescue 300 Air Force prisoners left in Iranian hands at the end of the first novel. Starting slowly, with many flashbacks to its predecessor and confusing shifts of scene, the story finds its pace once the operation itself gets under way. Ample and convincing air and ground action animates the 30-day enterprise, which involves a small force of Rangers, supported by fighters and gunships. Herman, a retired Air Force pilot, handles technical details and interservice politics with convincing finesse. His characters are two-dimensional, but sustain their plot roles adequately without getting in the way of the action that is the book's focus. Refreshingly, the rescue plan depends for success on neither an unlikely perfection of execution nor an implausibly incompetent enemy. In taking great pains to show the dangers in high-level micro-management of fast-moving special operations, however, Herman diminishes his argument by overkill. Nevertheless, fans of techno-thrillers and military procedurals will find this a good read.
