This is part of a course of language and literature study at Key Stage 4. The course covers language work and literary and non-literary texts including contemporary and pre-20th century poetry, literature, drama and media. In addition to a course book, there are seven self-contained literature study books, each leading the student through the close study of a major or set text, or prescribed period of poetry within its historical, social and cultural context. This volume is the "Course Book" and comprises eight units, each concentrating on a core element designed to develop students' knowledge and understanding and skills in a key area of the curriculum. There is also a mini-unit at the end of the book which addresses revision and exam techniques. Each unit of the course book builds on skills developed and practised in the previous units, with an emphasis on progression. However, units can be used independently and linked to an established scheme of work. Units can also be studied in conjunction with the related "Hodder English 4 Literature Study" books to give a complete integrated coverage of GCSE English and English Literature syllabuses, for example the course book unit on the Salem Witches can be directly linked to the literature study book work on "The Crucible". Activities included can help to generate written course work for GCSE/Standard Grade English and speaking and listening activities offer opportunities for oral assessment.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This is a self-contained study book which aims to lead the student through the section-by-section study of "An Inspector Calls" within its social, historical and cultural context. It draws out key points, themes and characterization, and activities explore each of the main characters in depth, focusing on how they are developed and how Priestley uses them to achieve dramatic tension through a series of startling revelations. Students are encouraged to read widely around the text and to look at the social and political issues of the Edwardian era. Group discussion and individual written assignments help students to form their own opinions as to what function the Inspector performs and what he might represent. The book can be used alone or alongside the "Hodder English 4" course book, and offers comprehensive coverage of National Curriculum requirements for the study of literary texts at Key Stage 4. Activities and stimuli in the text help to generate written coursework for GCSE English. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition.
