Key issues addressed include: · the components of national economic success between 1970 and 1996 · the nature and long-term impact of the 1997 crisis · the development of extended metropolitan regions and regional urban networks · the dark side of the regions development: marginalization, exclusion, civil unrest and damage to the environment · the regions prospects for the future in the aftermath of the 1997 crises, as it faces a declining competitive advantage in labor-intensive manufacturing and a corresponding decline in foreign investment, the rise of China as a major economic threat, the end of the Cold War and the beginning of the war on terror.
