This text covers the content of all the main specifications for the main AS chemistry course. It aims to make the subject memorable, interesting and accessible. The text is divided into seven sections, each of which is further subdivided into topics. The first section links the AS course to material students will be familiar with from GCSE chemistry. The later sections build on this knowledge by presenting the material in a clear, concise manner and relating theory to practice throughout. The wider importance of each topic is explained along with details of how it relates to other topics in chemistry. Included in the text are case studies which use familiar examples to help motivate pupils, worked examples and practice questions, revision and examination tips and "maps" which help establish links and give an overall view.

Andrew Hunt co-ordinates the work of the Nuffield Curriculum Projects Centre which has a portfolio of about a dozen curriculum projects mainly in the areas of Science, Design and Technology and Mathematics. Andrew was a founder member and director of the Association for Science Education's SATIS project. This project promoted the public understanding of science through the school curriculum and spanned the 5 - 19 age range. The project built up an international reputation and Andrew has led teacher training workshops based on SATIS approaches in many countries in Europe, America, Southern Africa and the Asia-Pacific region. This interest continues with the development of a new AS course called 'Science for Public Understanding'. Andrew was a science teacher in a variety of 11 - 18 schools for 20 years and in that time wrote a number of successful chemistry textbooks. He continues to write texts for the school and college curriculum. Andrew is part of the management team for another ASE project called Science across the World. This project creates opportunities for students in schools all over the world to explore issues related to science in society and then exchange their findings with students in other countries by fax or e-mail. Andrew is a vice-president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science with responsibility for the BA's young people's programme.
