A Canadian, Karen Wallace gained a degree in English from London University. Shortly afterwards she and her husband went to Toronto and worked in the publishing business. A few years later they moved to Ireland with their two young sons, and returned to England in 1982. She now writes full-time for children and for children's television. She and illustrator Mike Bostock won the TES Information Book Award for Think Of An Eel (Walker Books). Her novel Raspberries On The Yangtse was shortlisted for the Guardian Award. She is married to novelist Sam Llewellyn.
PreS-Gr. 2. Wallace and Bostock, whose credits include Imagine You Are a Crocodile (1997), now introduce the ankylosaurus. The first three lines are written from the dinosaur's point of view. The voice changes to standard third--person narration until the end, when the dinosaur records her final triumph: "I slam my tail sideways. Bone smashes bone. The tyrannosaurus limps away. The battle is over." In between, the book presents the mother ankylosaurus laying her eggs, smashing an egg-stealing troodon with her clublike tail, foraging for food, and, months later, watching her eggs hatch. Bostock's clear, simple drawings with sunlit washes offer an imaginative vision of peaceful interludes in desert and forest habitats as well as tooth-and-claw dinosaur fights. Though classified as nonfiction, this is a practical choice for libraries seeking simple picture books set in the late Cretaceous. Carolyn Phelan
