Synopsis

Meerkats tend to stick together, so Marvin's individuality makes him rather unpopular. But when they decide to stand up to the bullying buzzard brothers, who do they need but someone with a little bit more guts than the average meerkat - Marvin. A witty and amusing story showing that there's room for a little bit of individuality even in the closest knit family groups.

Review

A very enjoyable picture book with a loveable main character who will I am sure appeal to children and adults of all ages. Every page is a delight and it's the sort of book our child will want you to read again and again. -- www.thebookbag.co.uk On Sarah's previous picture book, Don't Mention Pirates A great story with fun illustrations, this book is a real treasure. -- My books mag A brilliant pirate story for the very young with beautiful illustrations to complement the fun storyline. At last there's a book for toddlers who are too young to watch Pirates of the Caribbean but can share the experience of the world of pirates with the rest of the family. Girls particularly will love this. -- www.lovereading4kids.co.uk On Ruby's Big Ideas: Beautifully Illustrated, with simple language ... Sarah McConnell's illustrations are wonderfully effective at showing Ruby's perspective. An Excellent story to be used in discussing size and position in the family with all early years children ... A warm, delightful book for every book corner. -- Early Years Educator An instant trigger for the imagination and good for predictive skills, this book incorporates delightful illustrations and dialogue that will appeal to both children and adults alike. -- As featured in Scholastic's Child Education March 2007 Marvin is a meerkat, though it has to be said that the cover illustration is different from the usual 'aah - sweet' look given these creatures. The habitual communal activities of his group include taking morning exercise, but Marv's individual quirks mean that he doesn't take things seriously and causes some disruption too. However it is Marv who has a plan beyond general panicking to discourage the bullying buzzard. When a diversion is needed what better than Marv's dance, an astonishing, attention-grabbing solo in the manner of that hilarious dance in The Office. A funny, exuberant book full of lively pictures with movement and activity and the plan of a nice underground burrow to explore. -- boysintobooks.co.uk Marvin is meerkat who is really rather fabulous... A lovely story about putting one's unique strengths to good use - however irritating they may seem to others. -- Junior
