From Library Journal

Poet Zhang Yonglin is sentenced to a labor camp he ironically describes as a haven amidst the hysteria of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. After he marries a woman he had seen eight years earlier, the story becomes, on one level, an analogy between his temporary sexual impotence and the postion of intellectuals. A year later he is ready to abandon his wife and escape from the camp. Cameo appearances by philosophic and literary figuresMarx and Meng-tz, Othello and Song Jiandiscussing China and sex allow the incorporation of non-novelistic elements while indulging in gallows humor. The references to Western culture and the translator's historical notes should make this complex and fascinating book easily accessible. Ethan Bumas, Fudan Univ., Shanghai

This translation first appeared in hardcover in 1988. Mass Market Paperback. Zhang Xianliang (1936 2014) was a Chinese novelist, essayist, and poet. Zhang began publishing poetry at the age of 13. During the Anti-Rightist Movement, in 1957, his poetry was criticized as counter-revolutionary, and Zhang was sent to a labor camp in Ningxia at age 21. He was subsequently detained several more times, and ultimately spent 22 years in prisons and labor camps. During the events of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, he expressed sympathy with the protesting students, resulting in the ban of his work "Getting Used to Dying" until 1993. He served as president of the Chinese Writers Association in Ningxia. His most well-known work, Half of Man is Woman is a semi-autobiographical reflections on his life experiences in prison and in witnessing the political upheaval of China during the Cultural Revolution.
