Synopsis

Ryshad had no choice but to kill his long-time friend and ally Aiten. Aiten's mind had been corrupted by the mysterious Elietimm and he was a danger to himself and a deadly threat to others. But that is no consolation to the grieving Ryshad and certainly will be of no help when he tries to explain it to Aiten's family.

To distract him from his troubles and from the strange dreams he has been having, Ryshad's patron, Messire D'Olbriot, sends him to Caladhria to assist the wizard Shiv, who is working for the Archmage himself. The wizards are trying to find a way to combat the strange aetheric magic of the Elietimm, which threatens to destroy the land. But Ryshad's desire to help goes far beyond the patriotic - he seeks revenge for the death of Aiten. What he doesn't know yet is that he will have to work with Livak, with whom he had a brief love affair, and that the strange dreams he has been having may hold the key to the mysterious Elietimm ...

From the Author

The challenges of the second novel
Writing a second novel presents very different challenges from the first one. One of the most important as far as I was concerned was to make sure I simply didn't write the same story again. Deciding to tell the tale in Ryshad's voice helped me make sure of that but demanded a distinctly separate voice to Livak's and a masculine voice at that. My thanks go to those various male friends who answered endless questions on everything from what's it like to have a beard to deconstructions of their most memorable clashes with wives and girlfriends. I want each Tale of Einarinn to be a story complete in itself, even when the action stems from events in earlier books. Making sure the newcomer has the information they need to make sense of the story while not delaying the action for established readers with tedious repetition proves a difficult balancing act and can only get harder as I write the Third, Fourth and Fifth tales. It's for the readers to judge my success on this, but I am determined to try. On the other hand, one of the delights of writing an on-going sequence is being able to portray the world of Einarinn in ever more detail and in this book, Ryshad's adventures enable me to expand on Tormalin society and to introduce the very different culture of the Aldabreshi Archipelago.
