Synopsis

*** 2013 Goodreads Choice Award Finalist in Fantasy ***

Two men who hate each other. One impossible mission. A legend in the making.
Hadrian Blackwater, a warrior with nothing to fight for is paired with Royce Melborn, a thieving assassin with nothing to lose. Together they must steal a treasure that no one can reach. The Crown Tower is the impregnable remains of the grandest fortress ever built and home to the realm's most prized possessions. But it isn't gold or jewels that the old wizard is after, and if he can keep them from killing each other they become a legendary team.

About the Author

After finding a manual typewriter in the basement of a friend's house, Michael inserted a blank piece of paper and typed: It was a dark and stormy night. He was just eight years old at the time and following the lead of the only literary master he was aware of...Snoopy from Schultz's Peanuts. From that very first line he was consumed by the desire to fill blank pages and see what doors the typewriter keys would unlock. Serious writing started after high school and Michael spent ten years developing his craft by studying authors such as Stephen King, Ayn Rand, and John Steinbeck. During that time, he wrote twelve novels, and after finding no traction in publishing, he gave up and vowed never to write creatively again.

Michael discovered that never was a really long time and ended his hiatus a decade later but only on the condition that he wouldn't seek publication. His intention was to write stories just for himself and to help foster a love of reading in his dyslexic daughter. After reading his early Riyria books, his wife made other plans. She loved the books and was determined to get his stories "out there." With her help Michael has been published through all three paths: small press, self-published, and traditional big-five. In May 2011, io9 named Michael to their Most Successful Self-Published Sci-Fi and Fantasy Authors List. In October 2012 Michael re-sold the rights to his Riyria Revelations to Orbit (fantasy imprint of big-five Hachette Book Group). In 2013 Orbit released his second series, The Riyria Chronicles. As of late 2013, English language sales of the Riyria novels have exceeded 450,000 copies. The series has also been signed to fifteen foreign language translations including: German, Dutch, French, Russian and Japanese.

Today, Michael continues to fill blank pages and is working on his third series tentatively titled The First Empire. His first science fiction novel, Hollow World will be published in April 2014.
