Roger the pig and his neighbor's bossy daughter vie for the honor of being in charge when a parental absence frees them for rambunctious activities.

Nobody likes a bullyRoger pig certainly doesn't. When his mother leaves Roger in charge of his little brother Nelson, a neighbor offers the services of her daughter Flo. Flo won't play what the boys want; she picks games only she can win. And she's verbally abusive when Roger loses. When Roger reaches the end of his rope (literally, in a fall from a treeprovoked by Flo), he insists that they play hide-and-seek, which little Nelson has been requesting from the beginning. In the middle of the game, Flo is humiliated and dragged home by her mother. The two brothers are on their own again, and Nelson's adoring look at his older brother, who smiles a broad, smug smile, is worth 1000 words. Gretz's books about Roger the lovable pig are real kid-pleasers, and her bright, colorful illustrations are appealing. Ages 3-7.

PreSchool-Grade 1 Perky pigs prance across the brightly-colored pages of this snappy, bouncy picture book. Young listeners and early readers will delight in the antics of Flo, the self-appointed babysitter, and Roger, who is supposed to be in charge of his little brother, Nelson. Officious Flo announces the games that they will play for the afternoon, and three guesses who is the winner in all contests. Her comeuppance arrives, however, during hide and seek. When their mothers return from the market, Flo is none too happy at being found in a can full of smelly garbage. The look of triumphal satisfaction on Roger's face says it all. Crisp text; clean, colorfulpages; and engagingly expressive il-lustrations all describe this porcinepearl of a book. Mary Lou Budd, Milford South Elementary School, Ohio
