Synopsis
Notice Historique Sur Les Faits Et Particularités Qui Se Rattachent À La Chapelle Expiatoire De Louis Xv1 Et De La Reine Marie-Antonette: D'après Documents Officiels Pleins D'émouvante Révélations by Abbé Savornin offers a documentary history of the Chapel Expiatoire built on the Rue D'Anjou-Saint-Honoré to commemorate Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette after their execution. Drawing on official documents and eyewitness testimonies, the work recounts the life, imprisonment, exhumations, and final translation of the royal remains; describes the erection of the monument under Louis XVIII and its restoration at Saint-Denis in 1815; and narrates the royal couple's fate in the Temple and the Conciergerie, including the king's testament and the queen's letters. The author assembles testimonies, official reports, and architectural notes to verify events and to illuminate the moral lessons of the French Revolution. The volume emphasizes fidelity to sources and offers readers a sobering record of tragedy, piety, and public memory, accompanied by engravings and documents that reproduce primary sources.
