Synopsis
"The Works Of Symon Patrick: Including His Autobiography" by Symon Patrick. This collection assembles late 17th?century Anglican sermons delivered in Covent Garden and St. James's, combining polemical exegesis with scriptural citation to defend a Christ-centered gospel. The sermons argue that Christ alone is Mediator, Priest, and Intercessor, opposing Catholic intercessors and the Mass; they affirm the sufficiency of Christ's one sacrifice, offered on the cross and perpetuated in heaven, and deny ongoing propitiation through earthly rites. They present Jesus’ heavenly priesthood and kingly authority, teach believers to pray in his name, and view the Lord's Supper as memorial and communion rather than a propitiatory sacrifice. The volume also emphasizes unity, humility, pacific church and state relations, and the reconciliation of Jews and Gentiles under Christ. Additionally, it provides practical guidance for clergy—private and public duties, liturgy, preaching, baptism, and pastoral care—grounded in scripture and church order. Set against the William of Orange era, the sermons urge Protestant unity, prudent leadership, repentance, and enduring zeal for doctrine and public virtue.
