This volume gathers Berkeley’s early polemical and mathematical writings: the political-theological tract Passive Obedience arguing for absolute non-resistance to civil authority, the arithmetic treatise Arithmetic demonstrated without Euclid or Algebra showing how arithmetic can be grounded in first principles, and the opening discussion Motion aimed at clarifying empirical, non-metaphysical explanations of movement. The Passive Obedience sections present a natural-law basis for obedience, address objections, and frame a university-level discourse.
