Outline Of A New System Of Logic: With A Critical Examination Of Dr. Whately's Elements Of Logic by George Bentham. This volume presents Bentham's broader program for logic, complementing Whately's Elements of Logic by offering an Analytical Outline and Critical Examinations of the Aristotelian tradition. Bentham defines Logic as the art-and-science of guiding the mind to knowledge, expands beyond deduction to include exposition, methodization, ontology of entities, and intellectual faculties. He defends an enlarged field, drawing on Bentham's Chrestomathia and his uncle Jeremy Bentham's ideas, and contrasts his approach with Condillac and Destutt de Tracy. The book surveys topics such as Definition, Exposition, Terms, Propositions, Deduction, Induction, and Fallacies, and includes extended commentary on the relation between logic and language, as well as the practical utility of logic for scientific and philosophical inquiry. The Preface explains that the early manuscripts were written in 1795–1811, and that the editor-s philosopher Bentham clarifies the relationship to his uncle's works and to Dr. Whately.
