Synopsis

Notes Upon A Type Of Phaestus, In Crete. (Reprinted From The Numismatic Chronicle.) by Samuel Birch. This essay, originally read before the Numismatic Society on May 28, 1840, offers a philological and iconographic analysis of a group of Phestus-type coins from Crete. Birch investigates the reverse scenes and legends, debating which deity and mythic figures they depict. He rejects straightforward identifications with Idomeneus, Iphis, Leucippe, and Iasion, and proposes instead that the figure represents the Cretan Helios Apollo (Abellios) or a closely related solar deity, drawing connections between the bird symbol, the plane tree, and Dionysian and Corybantian cults. The discussion extends to Cyme coinage in Asia Minor, including mint marks such as KYMIA AION and a common vase emblem, and to the interpretation of magistrates named on the coins. The paper situates the imagery within broader Greek and Doric myth, art, and religious practice, citing Eckhel, Mionnet, and others to illuminate coin readings and mythic associations.
