Synopsis
A Lecture by Dwight H. Olmstead. This 1874 work, delivered to the Young Men's Christian Union of New York, analyzes the Protestant Faith and the Protestant Reformation as an intellectual struggle over authority and private judgment. Olmstead contends the Reformation was driven by an insistence on free inquiry rather than a mere religious revival, and that Luther's 'faith' doctrine has been misconstrued. He defines faith as simple intellectual belief or mental assent, not a voluntary act or a guarantee of salvation, and argues that belief is involuntary. The lecture examines the relation between moral obligation and moral consequences, arguing that duty arises from conscience rather than from fear of punishment or from reward. It condemns the elevation of creeds as tests of membership and calls for a future church rooted in universal moral law and individual judgment. The volume concludes with reflections on tolerance, the limits of authority, and the possibility of a global, rational religion.
