Primitive Marriage: An Inquiry Into The Origin Of The Form Of Capture In Marriage Ceremonies by John Ferguson McLennan. McLennan argues that the "form of capture" is a widespread ritual prefiguring civil marriage and is linked to systems of exogamy. He shows that in certain societies betrothal or intertribal unions were preceded by decisive feigned or real abductions, while others drew on similar rites within endogamous groups.
