On The Improvement Of The Rifle As A Weapon For General Use by Lieutenant-Colonel Lane Fox. This 1858 lecture chronicles the history of rifled firearms and the scientific principles behind their accuracy. It draws on six years of practical experiments at Woolwich, Enfield, Hythe, and Malta (1851–1857) to trace how innovations in bullet shape, cartridge design, and bore geometry affected accuracy, range, and loading practicality. The narrative surveys the shift from spherical to elongated projectiles and the central issue of maintaining a consistent orientation of the bullet in flight. It covers Robins’ theoretical explanation of rifling, Delvigne’s early expansion techniques, the Minié system with its expansion cup, and the later development of self-expanding projectiles such as the Pritchett bullet, alongside competing bore reductions and grooving schemes proposed by Wilkinson, Lancaster, and Whitworth.
