Ireland And Its Rulers; Since 1829 by Daniel Owen Madden. This historical and political survey traces the course of Irish governance under British rule from the era of Catholic Emancipation onward. The work examines the dividing idea of 'two nations' in Ireland—an upper Protestant elite and a Catholic majority—and analyzes the major episodes that shaped policy and opinion: O'Connell's early career and the Catholic Association; the Doneraile Conspiracy trials; the Emancipation debates and the Repeal movement; the Northumberland and Anglesey administrations; the Coercion Acts and the temperance reform movement led by Father Mathew; and the evolving relations between landlords, tenants, and reformers. Madden offers portraits of leaders and factions, assesses the implications for the Empire, and contrasts reform and resistance within Ireland with English liberal currents. The book includes an Appendix presenting a Tenure Reform plan by Stephen Barry and materials on Catholic clergy and education. Overall, it is a critical, retrospective account of Ireland's political struggle and its rulers since 1829.
