An Inquiry Into The Origin And Intent Of Primitive Sacrifice, And The Scripture Evidence Respecting It: With Observations On The Opinions Of Spencer, Bishop Warburton, Archbishop Magee, And Other Writers On The Same Subject And Some Reflexions On The Unitarian Controversy by John Davison. The work surveys the origins of sacrificial worship and argues against a Divine Origin for primitive sacrifice, proposing a human origin instead, while examining its place within the History of Revealed Religion. It critically appraises the positions of Spencer, Warburton, Magee, and Outram, and engages with Unitarian controversy. In Part I Davison maintains there is no explicit Scriptural evidence that sacrifice began as a divine institution; where expiatory sacrifices appear, they belong to a later revelation in the Mosaic Law, not to primeval religion, and they point forward to the Gospel. In Part II he defends a human origin as not injurious to the Mosaic Law or the Gospel, arguing for the moral and symbolic functions of early oblations. In Part III he argues there is no early revelation linking primitive sacrifice to atonement, and outlines a progressive revelation from primeval faith to prophecy.
