Songs Of Rests by William Robertson Nicoll. A late?Victorian English devotional poetry collection compiled and edited by Nicoll, bringing together religious consolation verse and meditations on loss, grief, and hope from a broad roster of poets. The collection traces its origins to two earlier series (1879 and 1885) and was revised and enlarged in a new edition published in the 1890s. The poems address despondency, anxious doubt, bereavement, illness, death, and the longing for spiritual rest, offering comfort through Christian faith, patience, and trust in Providence. Notable contributors include Christina Rossetti, Dinah M. Craik, Frances Browne, Dora Greenwell, Alfred Norris, and many others, with prefatory notes and occasional biographical glimpses. The volume features devotional lyrics such as Come Unto Me, The Sunrise Never Failed Us Yet, and The Lamb of God, and was issued in London by Hodder and Stoughton and in New York by Dodd, Mead and Company, accompanied by an etched portrait.
