Hints To Anglers by Adam Dryden is a comprehensive nineteenth-century guide to trout fishing and related angling methods in Scotland. The book collects practical instructions across several techniques, including fly-fishing, worm- and minnow-fishing, creeper and mayfly methods, and roe fishing, with detailed advice on tackle, line composition, and presentation. Dryden emphasizes stealth and precision—fishing upstream with a light rod, keeping out of sight, casting across and up the stream, and striking quickly but gently when a take occurs. He prescribes shallow water and shallow casts, frequent casting, and fishing a variety of water depths rather than concentrating on deep pools. The work also provides regional roundups of streams and rivers in the Forth, Tweed, Clyde and Solway areas, with notes on seasonality, water conditions, and the best lures for different waters. Included are example diary entries from a multi-year angling season, illustrating how tactics translate into results.
