Henry Dodwell. This 1706 treatise argues that the human soul is naturally mortal and only immortalizes through God’s pleasure via the Baptismal Spirit. Dodwell defends episcopal authority as the sole channel for imparting the Spirit, contending that the Divine Spirit is conferred through apostolic Succession and the Church’s Sacraments. He distinguishes between the mortal Soul and the immortal Spirit, and explores how immortality is granted, conditioned by belief, baptism, and participation in the Mystical Body of Christ. The work surveys patristic and Hebrew-Christian sources, contrasting the Old and New Covenants, and addresses Gentiles, infants, and those separated from ecclesial communion. Across a lengthy preface and Premonition, Dodwell argues for a universal, Spirit-borne immortality accessible only through Christ, while maintaining that the earthly Covenant cannot guarantee eternal life without the Spirit, making the Church, Baptism, and episcopal ministration central to salvation.
