Synopsis
Waterloo: A Sequel To The Conscript Of 1813 by Erckmann-Chatrian is a historical novel told in the first person by Joseph Bertha, a French tradesman and former soldier who returns to Pfalzbourg after the Wars of the Napoleonic era. The narrative follows his reunion with Catherine, his fiancée, and their Aunt Grédel as they navigate the fragile peace after 1814, the permissive postwar climate, and the political upheavals of the Bourbon restoration. Through Joseph’s memories, the text weaves intimate domestic life—work at the shop, marriage, friendship, and family—with the wider upheavals caused by émigrés, ministers, and the shifting loyalties of a nation reconfiguring itself after revolution. The second part of the book moves toward the Waterloo campaign, recounting the battles of Ligny and Waterloo from a soldier’s perspective, and the ensuing disillusionment with political leaders and the costs of war. The work blends personal tragedy, social critique, and historical events to explore liberty, justice, and the hardships of ordinary people in a time of upheaval, as France struggles to redefine itself while enduring conquest, occupation, and restoration.
