Balaustion’s Adventure: Including A Transcript From Euripides by Robert Browning is a narrative-poem in which a young Greek girl named Balaustion recounts a sea voyage and a dramatic encounter with Euripidean drama. Framed as Balaustion’s travelogue and speech, the poem follows her voyage from Rhodes toward Kaunos and Syracuse, the gathering of ships, and a chorus of gratitude for Euripides’s plays. The centerpiece is Balaustion’s own recitation and interpretation of Euripides’s Alcestis, performed for a Syracusan audience, as she narrates the tragedy of Alkestis, Admetos’s wife who sacrifices herself for him and is later restored through divine intervention. Browning uses the interwoven drama to explore poetry’s power to awaken empathy, justify sacrifice, and illuminate moral choices in rulers and citizens alike.
