The work parodies literary forms, theatre, high society, politics, and journalism; it skewers pretensions of the aristocracy, the press, and the Empire; it alternates between faux-epic battles and domestic farce. The tone alternates between mock-serious and farcical, reflecting Thackeray's appetite for social critique, wordplay, and vivid caricature. This edition reproduces the nineteenth-century humor with modern typography and notes.
