The volume traces the history and aims of rhetoric, surveys its relations to aesthetics, and explains the threefold division of the discipline into Invention, Arrangement, and Style. It surveys the varieties of discourse—poetry, prose, oratory, letters, history, biography, essays, and fiction—and discusses how rhetoric can enlighten understanding, please the imagination, move the passions, and influence the will. The author explains ends of discourse (conviction and persuasion), the modes of argument, and the uses of rhetorical design in both writing and speaking. It also includes guidance on the organization of discourse, the duties of a speaker or writer, and the cultivation of elocution and delivery for public address. The book is a foundational manual for students and instructors in rhetoric.
