"The Gentleman's Calling"is a late-17th-century Christian-humanist tract exhorting English Gentlemen to reform their conduct and to fulfill a Christian calling. It blends sermonic exhortation, classical and biblical allusions, and social critique to argue that genuine gentility rests in duty, education, temperance, and charitable use of wealth and time, rather than luxury or arrogance. It treats religious disputes as a social and spiritual disease that corrupts faith, hinders conversion, and disturbs civil peace; root causes are pride, curiosity, and covetousness, with later chapters analyzing how these vices fuel and sustain contention within the Church. The author contends that unity in love and charity, not doctrinal wrangling, sustains true religion and evangelism. Through sections on education, wealth, and time, the tract sketches a program of reform for the gentry: disciplined living, prudent stewardship, humility, and benevolent action. The closing portions offer private devotions urging repentance and reconciliation within Christian fellowship.
