This nineteenth-century study offers a plate-by-plate analysis of Raphael's celebrated Cartoons, based on careful examination of the original works in the Hampton Court Gallery. Norton presents a structured survey of seven principal cartoons, including Paul Preaching at Athens; The Death of Ananias; The Charge to Peter; Elymas the Sorcerer Struck with Blindness; The Miraculous Draught of Fishes; Paul and Barnabas Rejecting the Sacrifice at Lycaonia; and The Beautiful Gate of the Temple. For each scene he explains the composition, the personalities and expressions, the drapery and lighting, and the landscape and architectural settings, showing how Raphael conveys moral and theological meaning through gesture and contrast. The author also discusses the historical context of the cartoons, their engraving and distribution, and the broader significance of Raphael's cartoons in the history of art. The work remains a notable example of art-historical method and iconographic analysis.
