The Council And Infallibility: An Address by Jean-Henri Merle D'Aubigné. The address, delivered in Geneva on December 10, 1869, argues against the papal doctrine of infallibility and critiques the Vatican Council's claim to universal authority. Merle D'Aubigné contrasts the Rome-centered assembly with the Gospel's universality, insisting that true ecumenical fellowship cannot be confined to a single city or a single church. He traces the origins of papal supremacy to forgeries and decretals, explains how the forged Isidore Decretals cemented the Vatican's power, and cites historical episodes in which popes were fallible or condemned by councils, including Liberius, Honorius, Formosus, and Galileo's era.
