Synopsis
The Race For Wealth: A Novel by Mrs. J. H. Riddell is a sprawling social novel set in mid-19th-century London. It follows two men, Percy Forbes and Lawrence Barbour, whose different starts in life spark a fierce contest for wealth, status, and happiness. Percy, disinherited by his father, refuses to accept a noble settlement and goes to London to build a fortune, while Lawrence, a talented and upright young man, climbs the ladder through hard work and shrewd partnerships. As the fortunes of their households rise and fall, Percy is drawn into a partnership, Lawrence wins Olivine’s affection and ultimately marries her, and the Alwyns’ firm collapses in bankruptcy, reshaping their world. The novel ends with reflections on wealth, morality, and the true measure of happiness, as Lawrence, Olivine, and their circle confront whether riches can buy peace or love.
