Sketches Of Character: Or, Specimens Of Real Life : A Novel. This early 19th-century three-volume novel presents a mosaic of English social life, tracing the manners, foibles, and ambitions of the gentry and their circles. Through the households of Sir Philip Aucherly and Lady Aucherly, the neighboring Dorringtons, Mansells, and the nine Simmons sisters, the work surveys country life, Bath society, marriages, education, and the cultivation of reputation. The Preface announces a faithful, and sometimes comic, depiction of living manners rather than a conventional moral tale, while the narrative threads together private biographies, social gatherings, balls, theatrical entertainments, and Sunday church scenes.
