The Analyst; Or, A Discourse Addressed To An Infidel Mathematician by George Berkeley. This 18th-century critique investigates whether the Object, Principles, and Inferences of the Modern Analysis (Fluxions) are more distinctly conceived or more evidently deduced than religious mysteries and points of faith. Berkeley argues that the Fluxionary Method rests on obscure notions of motion and instantaneous rates, and that the standard notations of fluxions, differences, and infinitesimals lead to logical fallacies when pushed to extremes. Through a sequence of chapters and demonstrations, he questions the legitimacy of taking 'moments' and 'differences' as true quantities, and he shows how the method can yield conclusions that do not follow from consistent premises. He also juxtaposes epistemology with theology, insisting that clear reasoning and a robust notion of evidence are essential for genuine understanding. The Analyst thus functions as a foundational anti-infidel critique in the philosophy of mathematics.
