Reflections is a long verse poem by John Gisborne (1833) that surveys the year through cantos for January through December. The poem blends intimate nature description with moral, religious, and philosophical reflections, moving from winter scenes through spring, summer, and autumn, and returning to winter’s closed cycle. It interweaves observations of landscapes such as Ramsor Moor, Wootton, the Wever Hills, and Derbyshire scenery with historically themed vignettes, including episodes from Britain’s past and the American War. The work also contains biblical and classical allusions, meditations on time, mortality, and Providence, and occasional biographical asides about explorers and poets. Across its multivalent scenes, Gisborne invites contemplation of nature’s beauty as a moral guide, the transience of human affairs, and the sovereignty of a divine order that underpins the cycles of the year.
