A View At The Foundations: Or, First Causes Of Character As Operative Before Birth, From Hereditary And Spiritual Sources by Woodbury Melcher Fernald examines a nineteenth-century theory that the soul is an organized structure shaped before birth by hereditary and spiritual conditions. The treatise argues that prenatal brain and body organization determines the temperament, intellect, and moral tendencies transmitted from parents, and that these pre-natal inputs lay the foundation for future regeneration or ruin. Fernald reviews empirical anecdotes, religious authorities (notably Swedenborg), and a theory of prenatal influence intertwining biology, psychology, and theology. He contends that, under divine guidance, the first birth can be so purified through marriage, sex, and pre-natal environment that it invites or even ensures spiritual development, while postnatal education alone cannot equal the formative power of the womb. He also discusses the possibility of regenerative traits passing through natural descent to children of regenerate parents, and envisions an eventual epoch when marriages are consciously engineered to yield noble offspring. The work argues for a radical reorientation of education, religion, and family life around prenatal genesis.
