The Life Of William Hutton: Including A Particular Account Of The Riots At Birmingham In 1791; To Which Is Subjoined, The History Of His Family by William Hutton. This memoir traces the life of an 18th-century Birmingham figure who rose from Derby-born silk-mill apprentice to a prominent bookseller, binder, antiquary, and public servant. Born in 1723 into a dissenting family, Hutton describes early hardships, education by self-study, and the pivotal move from the Silk-mill to Nottingham, Birmingham, and beyond. He recounts his invention of a printing and book-binding craft, the founding of a circulating library (the first in Birmingham), and his ascent to roles in local governance, including the Court of Requests. The main narrative culminates with the riots at Birmingham in 1791, the losses he and others suffered, and the long fight for restitution. Interwoven is the History Of His Family, written by Hutton and published by his daughter Catherine Hutton, which presents the lineage in parallel with his own life.
