The Works by Charles Sumner. This volume collects Sumner's mid-19th-century orations, speeches, and essays on abolition, civil rights, and reform. The contents range from Fame and Glory—an Amherst College commencement oration about true fame rooted in justice, benevolence, and peace—to political addresses urging opposition to the extension of slavery and to the Slave Power. It includes essays on the law of nations, the ethics of war and peace, and the future of human progress, as well as speeches calling for union among all parties in the fight against slavery, the Free-Soil movement, and the early republican anti-slavery coalition. Across these texts Sumner advocates emancipation, constitutional fidelity, and international arbitration as paths toward human betterment, while criticizing the cruelties of slavery and war and praising the ideals of Liberty, Brotherhood, and Peace. The volume also documents Sumner’s active involvement in reform movements, including abolitionism, pacifism, and the political realignments that shaped pre-Civil War American politics.
